The News!
Jack finished his ASFA field championship title on Dec 27th. This was the icing on the cake for 2009. This year he received his GRC (Gazehound Racing Championship), LCX (Lure Courser Excellent) and Conformation championship too. Other highlights included winning the LGRA Nationals and taking second place at the NOTRA Nationals in October. In April at the LGRA trial in Rhode Island, Jack won BOS, High GRC points and High Scoring Field Champion. At the IWADV LGRA trial in October he took 3rd place out of a field of 24 starters.

Jack is ranked #1 AKC Lure Courser for the second year in the row. He placed #3 in LGRA straight racing and #2 in NOTRA oval track. He qualifies for his Versatility Certificate from the IWCA this year. He exceeded our expectations as a multiple Best in Field courser, by winning the Am-bred class at both IWANE and IWAGS Specialties and being a consistent runner in multiple styles. But 2009 was even more exciting by adding four new titles in front of and behind his name.

DC Riversong's Long May You Run, FCh, SC, RN, GRC, CGC

Call Name: Clare (aka Clare Bear)
Date of Birth: November 26, 2007
Sire: CH Wolfhaven Cabriole Berwyck
Dam: Riversong's Ragged Glory, JC
Breeder: Dave and Cyn Patterson
Owners: Chris and Robin Coen, Mary Ellen Shriver and Cyn Patterson

Clare would tell you that she's much more than a pretty face but on November 12, 2009, weeks short of her second birthday, Clare banked on that face and body and picked up her second major in conformation in Syracuse, New York. On this uncharacteristically warm day in upstate New York, Clare reached an incredible milestone – she became a Dual Champion.

A precocious girl, Clare quickly became an AKC Field Champion two weeks following her 1st birthday. She quickly followed that milestone with a Rally Novice title in three straights trials and easily passed the Canine Good Citizen Test at the IWCA Nationals in Rhode Island. She quickly added Gazehound Racing Champion to her titles in July, participating and placing at both the IWCA and Irish Wolfhound Association of the Delaware Valley LGRA events. Her Oval Track Racing career began only a few months back in October, but as expected, she happily embraced the sport, and finally in less than a year participating in ASFA trials, Clare achieved her fourth championship title - ASFA Field Champion.

And during this somehow unbelievably short time, this incredible hound qualified for the IWCA Versatility Certificate which will be awarded at the Nationals in 2010. Clare enjoys everything she does and wants to DO everything embodying the term versatile. She has tried and enjoyed agility, her favorites the A-frame and the tunnel. And although not titled, she has participated in tracking events and one day soon, her owners may find some time to take her to an AKC tracking event. If only her owners had more time and more weekends for all the pursuits she so enjoys!

She was called Sunbeam by Cyn and Dave Patterson when she was a mere itty bitty Irish Wolfhound, well before she came to live with the Coens'. A more apt name could not be given to that girl. Clare has a wonderful, sunny disposition which still shines through. She has such a joy for life and it shows in all she does.

Dam: CH Kellcastle Pink Champagne JC
Breeder: Jonette Jones

Twister's name is NOW BISS CH Steppin'wolf's Dans Mon Coeur (which means in my heart). We would simply like to say that Twister dedicates his win to his dad Errol.

On Saturday, September 20th, the IWCA participated in "Meet the Breeds" in the AKC Responsible Dog Owner day activities at Madison Square Park in New York City.  The event ran from 11 AM until 3 PM and Eileen Flanagan, Roberta Pliner and I, along with Roberta’s IW Circe, manned the table.  The Park was full of people, with their own dogs and they visited the table and Circe, who greeted the crowd and was a great ambassador for the breed.  In actual fact, we had very few people who actually wanted information about the breed, but simply enjoyed seeing Circe.

Dubh Butch of Nutstown, FCh, LCM, JC, CGC

Born: September 8, 2001
Sire: Millenium of Nutstown
Dam: Nutstown Aine of Gerrardstown
Breeders: John and Kathleen Kelly
Owners: Cecil and Marypat Corbett and John and Kathleen Kelly

Dubh Butch of Nutstown CGC (Mr. Butch) owned by Cecil and Marypat Corbett and John and Kathleen Kelly achieved his Lure Courser of Merit award (LCM) under ASFA rules this past May 18th. Butch lives to course; he has had quite a career as a bag chaser. His field champion title came after only 5 trials, one of those trials was the IWCA Specialty held in Yellow Springs Ohio in May of 2003, where he won Best of Breed, defeating 24 other Irish Wolfhounds, Mr. Butch went to run the course two more times that day to earn his AKC JC title. Butch got his new title at the Wind Chasers Coursing Club in Leroy Indiana.

Gralyn Autumn Red Fern, FCh, JC

Born:  January 17, 2007
Sire:  CH Ballygran's Aonghus Alef
Dam:  CH Glendalough Medarlin Shaydalein
Breeders:  Cecil & Marypat Corbett
Owners:  Linda Tucker and Marypat Corbett

Gralyn Autumn Red Fern (Fern) owned by Linda Tucker and Marypat Corbett has qualified for her ASFA Field Champion Title. Fern has only been coursing since March and loves to tear up the field. Anyone who attended coursing at the IWCA specialty this past April in Parker Texas might remember Fern as the hound that wouldn’t be caught. Her reputation as the illusive, non retrievable hound has even garnered her a video on You Tube. Fern finished her title at the Midwest Coursing Club trial in Racine this past August.

CH Glenamadda Starkeeper Verity

BISS CH Glenamadda Starkeeper Verity

Born: February 16, 2006
Sire: CH Taliesin's Llenlleawg (Merlin)
Dam: US & CAN Can. CH Starkeeper Glenamadda Realtan (Raleigh)
Breeders: Dr. Susan Prokopenko (Glenamadda) and Jocelyne Gagne (Starkeeper)
Owners: Pat Murkland and Jocelyne Gagne
Handlers: Bill Buell and Erin Hines; their family is her second, loving family.

We're very fortunate to love and have in our family a happy and sweet girl, who at the age of two is excelling in the show ring. Her AKC registered name, Verity, means truth, but she is already creating her own legend. In early 2008, our girl finished her AKC championship title with back-to-back-weekend majors, just after her second birthday. The very next day after completing her CH title, we bumped her up to compete as a champion and she won Best of Breed, under Dr. Richard F. Greathouse; there were 31 entries, including six specials! That was very thrilling ... and then ...

In July 2008, she went to her very first specialty to compete as a young champion. Judge Eugene Blake awarded her Best of Breed at the Irish Wolfhound Association of the West Coast specialty (96 conformation entries, including 23 champions)!

April and May of 2008 have been especially good to Gracie.  On April 10, 2008, Gracie was awarded the IWCA's Versatility Certificate.  Adding to Gracie's many accomplishments in lure coursing, she attained the title of MC at a trial on April 13, and on May 10 earned the title of LCX, only a few months after turning 3 years old.

Dublin

O'Berry's Dublin My Pleasure
UD, RAE, JC, NJP, CGC

Call Name: Dublin
Born: Sept 7, 2003
Sire: CH Sharalot's Tanks-A-Lot
Dam: U-CD Lady Erin O'Berry CDX, RAE, JC, AX, OAP, OAJ, OJP, FFX-AP, FFX-AG, VC, CGC, TDI, 2006 AKC-Eukanuba Agility Invitee  (Also earned 1 UD leg, Field Major Ptd, MACH pointed, 3 MX legs, 1 AXJ leg)

Breeder/Owner: Kimberly Berry DVM

Dublin keeps chipping away at trying to become AKC's First IW to earn a UDX. He recently picked up leg # 2 while earning a 3rd place in Utility B and today (6/8/08) picked up leg # 3. Legs are earned by qualifying in Utility B & Open B at the same trial on the same day. He needs 7 more legs to finish this very difficult to earn title - Only 223 dogs (all breed) earned this title last year of which only 3 were hounds. Compare this to 4,039 CD (Companion Dog) titles earned all breed of which 140 were earned by hounds and 6 by IW's.

Murphy at NOTRA

Eirian Majestic Murphy, MC, JOR, CGC, TT

Call Name:  Murphy
DOB:  January 18, 2005
Sire: Wolf Tone Ryan
Dame: Caithness Ruby Saoirse
Breeders:  Jack and Mary Ellen Shriver
Owners:  Robin and Chris Coen

On April 5, 2008, on a beautiful day at North Branch Park in NJ at the IWAGS Lure Coursing Trial, Murphy achieved his Master Courser title almost two years to the day that he garnered his JC title.

It was a momentous occasion for his loving owners and breeders, but for Murphy, it was just another wonderful day in which he got to go lure coursing.  A happy courser, Murphy has finished in the AKC Top 5 for Irish Wolfhounds for two straight years running and in the ASFA Top 20 Irish Wolfhounds in 2007.

Always up for the chase, he earned his JOR title in NOTRA in November 2007 and is working towards his GRC title in LGRA.

When not running, Murphy can be seen with his sister on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York performing in the opera Lucia di Lammermoor.

FC Eirian Graceful Beauty, FCh, MC, RN, GRC, JOR, CGC, TT, VC

Call Name: Gracie
Born: January 18, 2005
Sire: Wolf Tone Merlyn
Dam: Caithness Ruby Saoirse
Breeders: Mary Ellen and Jack Shriver
Owners: Chris and Robin Coen

On October 13, 2007, this very athletic 2 year old passed her Temperament Test qualifying her for the IWCA Versatility Certificate well before her third birthday.

The fast and agile hound quickly obtained championship titles in AKC and ASFA lure coursing. Showing her prowess as a champion lure courser, Gracie won the Open Stake at the IWCA National Specialty in Texas in April 2007, won Best of Breed and finalist at the AKC National Lure Coursing Championships in North Carolina in October 2007 and is a four time Best in Field winner. Showcasing her phenomenal speed, Gracie has also garnered the LGRA GRC championship. She has also completed her NOTRA JOR title and was only hampered by the lack of trials to further her Oval Track Racing career. A very competitive hound, Gracie easily obtained her Rally Novice title, going three for three in her entered trials, and ending her third trial with a second place finish all without any obedience training. She easily completed her CGC certification

Truly a "performance" dog, Gracie and her brother Murphy, have performed in the Metropolitan Opera's Lucia di Lammermoor in New York City for 10 sold out performances in 2007 and 2008 including the Opera House's Opening Night Gala which was viewed on the jumbotrons in New York's Times Square. Meeting and greeting the crowds before the event in Lincoln Center, both hounds have proven a wonderful ambassador to the breed. Both hounds were featured in the New York Daily News for their performance. Gracie has also done numerous print work including shots for Ralph Lauren Fashion.

Gracie is an incredible Irish Wolfhound, surpassing all expectations. Also known as the Golden Girl and Super G, Gracie has two very proud owners and a very happy breeder.

O'Berry's Dublin My Pleasure
UD, RAE, JC, NJP, CGC

Call Name: Dublin
Born: Sept 7, 2003
Sire: CH Sharalot's Tanks-A-Lot
Dam: U-CD Lady Erin O'Berry CDX, RAE, JC, AX, OAP, OAJ, OJP, FFX-AP, FFX-AG, VC, CGC, TDI, 2006 AKC-Eukanuba Agility Invitee  (Also earned 1 UD leg, Field Major Ptd, MACH pointed, 3 MX legs, 1 AXJ leg)

Breeder/Owner: Kimberly Berry DVM

On July 1, 2007, Dublin completed his Utility Dog (UD) title, becoming only the 9th IW in AKC history and the first since 1993 to earn this title. He did so in fine style with 2 first places and one 3rd place at all breed obedience trials. His first leg was earned with a 191 (out of 200) to take 1st place in a class of 18. He finished the title at 3 years, 9  months and 24 days of age, making him one of the youngest (if not THE youngest) IW to earn the title. In addition, he earned the 3 required legs in only 5 trials - the average estimated number of trials to finish this title is 20, regardless of breed!

Dublin has always been a stellar obedience performer. His first IWCA Nationals at 8 months of age, he paired up with his dam, Erin, to win the obedience brace class and placed 2nd in Pre-Novice in 2004. He returned to Nationals in 2005 to complete his CD  while winning High in Trial. The journey from CD to UD title was only 25 1/2 months while it was only 10 months between his CDX and his UD titles.

After earning his UD, Dublin completed his RAE (Rally Advanced Excellent) title. He and Erin were among the 3 IW to earn the RN (Rally Novice) title the first weekend it was offered by AKC (Jan 1 & 2, 2005). Meanwhile Erin became the 2nd IW To earn the RAE and Dublin became the 3rd - making them the first (and so far ONLY) parent -offspring pair to earn this title. He then followed up by finishing his JC title the next weekend.

Dublin loves competing and is a real crowd pleaser. He has since earned his first leg towards his UDX (Utility Dog Excellent), a title that has never been earned by an Irish Wolfhound. He is also looking forward to getting back into agility. He is a great example of how versatile an IW can be and has been a great ambassador for the breed at all breed trials.
