1/8/2012 A New Year's Message from the IWCA President, Jackie Carswell
1/8/2012    From Bambi Rabe, National Club Liaison

It is a new year replacing the last which was sweet and sour for the IWCA. This new year gives us the opportunity to access our club and its culture, our actions contributing to this, and our feelings of unity as a national club. As many of us have chain-link around our perimeters to protect our hounds from themselves (and others) our club has chain link around its perimeters. Is that fencing broken; crushed from the weight of continuing assaults, or shored up by new ideas, creative approaches to changes and continuity. Are there positive milestones, or stones in the path of productivity and unity? Are we communicating?

An ideal example of the pulling together of members and fanciers to accomplish the goals was this past year’s IWAGS dog show.

IWAGS 2011IWAGS 2011
IWAGS 2011IWAGS 2011

Our national show had its weather glitches, which were well handled, but nothing like the surprise snowstorm on Halloween weekend in New Jersey. With people coming from far distances to show to Judges Tim Finney and Glynis Littlewood,  the determination of the exhibitors and show committee made the show go on. It took tenacity and snowplows. No power, no problem. No heat (that’s why you brought your favorite cuddle dog) eventually generators. No show grounds, postpone for a day. No enthusiasm, absolutely not. With all in the same boat, the comradeship increased, exhibitor helping exhibitor, and the IWAGS club pulling out the best in everyone. The show did go on, both days into one, and no news of accidents coming or going, a true miracle. Quality dogs and quality people pulling together in very unusual circumstances to show and share.

So does snow bring out the best and rain and mud the worst in club members? This is too easy of an explanation for poor sportsmanship, club dividing rumors and personal attacks. But the club must be doing something right. There has been a flood of new voices on the IWCA yahoo group. There has been establishment of new local club, being formed with enthusiasm, and supporting AKC and IWCA events. And then there were those that met the breeds, braving the Javits Center. Our AKC delegate represents our presence in the dog world and constantly keeps us informed with what is happening in the AKC. And the website keeps the membership and the fanciers informed and supported. There have been member suggestions made to the nominating committee. There has been some local news coming to the liaison committee. And there has been education on both the national and local club levels. So let us continue. Share your club’s stories, not just your wins. Share your educational information and successful programs. Share your personal stories that have impacted you and your hounds. And please, as you do for your hounds, protecting them and always caring, have the same respect for your club, the club’s policies and codes, and the board who tries its best to guide the club in honesty and unity.
1/8/2012 OBITUARY: ALICE deGROOT, DVM, 1928-2011

Distinguished veterinarian, animal activist, and devoted friend of the breed, Dr. Alice deGroot (“call name" 'Aggie') passed away on Wednesday, November 16 after a long illness. When she was four years old, she had a dream about a sick dog and when she woke up, she knew that she was destined become a veterinarian. She fulfilled that destiny when she entered veterinarian school at the University of California, Davis. She was only the third woman in America to receive a DVM degree. After earning her degree in 1958, she began years of service to the physical health and emotional well-being of animals. During her practice, her investigations of animal cruelty, her expertise in canine behavior, and her animal shelter innovations, made her a well-respected leader in the field. But it was not an easy road. Throughout her professional career, Aggie encountered gender biases and opposition to some of her more innovative ideas. Nonetheless with typical resolve, she persevered and more often than not, prevailed. As a result of her extensive experience, she often was asked to testify on behalf of animal rights legislation. In October 2011, she received the Mary Jane Garcia Award as a "Champion for Animals," presented by Animal Protection of New Mexico.

In 1959, Aggie acquired her first Irish Wolfhound, "Quill," from her friend Lois Thomassen of Fleetwind Kennel. She went on to love many more hounds including a number of rescues. She also was an ardent supporter of several rescue organizations. She was a lifetime member of the RMIWA, the IWCA, and the IWAWC. As Tracey Luty commented in the November/December issue of "the Hounds Pause," "the Fianna have called Aggie, her sister, Sally Polk, and her best friend Alison Sanders. They are likely having a great time catching up on old times and loving their hounds who have gone before them."

AKC LAUNCHES NEW BREEDER OF MERIT PROGRAM

-- Recognition Program Celebrates & Rewards Dedicated Breeders --

New York, NY – The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) announced today the launch of the Breeder of Merit program, a new initiative designed to recognize AKC’s core breeders.

“The Breeder of Merit program allows the American Kennel Club to celebrate our dedicated, passionate breeders who truly are the backbone of the sport and the foundation of our organization,” said AKC’s Chief Operating Officer John Lyons. “Our Breeders of Merit are committed to both improving their breed through health testing and selective breeding programs, and proving their breed through achievements in the show ring. They are special and will be emulated by new breeders entering the sport. Being a successful breeder in the Fancy does not come easy. Years of hard work, vision, and a willingness to do the right thing are required to be successful. Our Breeders of Merit have these qualities and deserve to be recognized.”

To achieve the Breeder of Merit designation, breeders should:

• Certify that applicable health screens are performed on the sire and dam as recommended by the Parent Club.
• Hold membership in an AKC club.
• Have a history of at least 5 years involvement with AKC events.
• Earn Conformation, Companion and/or Performance titles on at least 4 dogs they have bred/co-bred.
• Demonstrate their commitment to ensuring 100% of the puppies they produce are AKC registered.

As part of the Breeder of Merit program, breeders will receive:

• Complimentary access to $20.00 value per month for free online reports in the AKC online store.
• Access to the AKC Direct toll free number.
• Online Record support to ensure that their records are accurate, complete and easily accessible.
• A frameable certificate of distinction.
• Free Online Breeder Classified listings along with a special Breeder of Merit designation.
• Acknowledgement on a special page of the AKC website and in the AKC Gazette.
• Free or discounted fees on all secondary transactions such as duplicate registration applications, revoke limited status applications, etc.
• Breeder of Merit web banner for display on their website.
• Breeder of Merit lapel pin.

9/1/2010 SB 250 has been killed and that will be the end of that bill as it’s the end of a two year legislative session with the author, Senate Majority Leader, Dean Florez being termed out (thank God/Dog!).

Judie Mancuso has promised her minions she will bring a new bill for MSN next year so we have little time to rest on our laurels! We need to get ahead of their game and massive war chest and come up with our own bill that will actually save pets lives instead of killing more animals in shelters. Bill Bruce of Calgary Canada and Nathan Winograd of the No Kill Movement have some really proactive ideas that will save animals lives and you’d think a progressive state as California would want to be on the forefront of that movement. It’s all about educating our legislators and we’re fortunate to have so many groups working with the legislator’s staff aides directly. However, these groups cannot do it themselves and they depend on foot soldiers such as us to provide support.

Thanks to all IWCA members for your phone calls, faxes and/or visits to your legislators to communicate how awful the bill was and it would not meet its supposed intended purpose.

Scotia Brosnan

I am the Chairman of the nominating committee for the 2010 elections. I would like to invite the entire membership to submit names of people they would like to see considered for a position on the board.

All persons must be active members, in good standing, with the IWCA.

Any name submitted should include the reason why that person should be considered and what they have to offer.

Submitting a name is no guarantee they would be nominated to be on the new slate for 2010. But please be assured that any and all qualified people will be considered.

All names should be sent to me by Oct. 30th, 2009.

Thank You,

7/20/2009 The Outstanding Sportsmanship Award Program

Dear IWCA Members,

Again this year AKC will be providing a Medallion to member clubs for. This gives our club the opportunity to honor an individual whom the IWCA Members feel has demonstrated good sportsmanship or special achievements with, or for our hounds throughout the year.

I am asking the membership to choose an individual who they feel would meet this requirement.  It can be a person who has accomplished work to help our hounds or a person who has done an outstanding job in Competition, Obedience and Agility or for any special title they may have achieved with their hound.

Please send your suggestions by December 31, 2009 to: Glynis Littlewood, 776 Hwy 113, Rogersville,  TN  37857.

The person who receives the most nominations will be presented with the Medallion at our National Specialty Dinner in 2010.

Thank you,

Glynis Littlewood,
Chair for The Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.

6/26/2009 IWCA Performance Committee Update on LGRA and AKC

This is a progress report to update all that are following the IWCA’s mission to get Large Gazehound Racing (LGRA) accepted as an AKC recognized sport, this would allow the Wolfhound Club to offer it as part of our National Specialty Show.

As many of you may know, your performance committee has been busy working behind the scenes, striving to get the AKC to recognize straight racing, to approve it as a non AKC sport. The IWCA was put on notice after the 2005 specialty to stop offering LGRA events as part of our National Specialty shows program. We thought this was a shame since LGRA has been gaining popularity as an event at our show and participants who might not otherwise participate at a National Specialty were able to attend and compete.

The IWCA performance committee made it our mission to make a credible attempt to get this done for our membership and our Irish Wolfhounds. LGRA meets the criteria for a non AKC acceptable sport but officials at AKC have told us that no one has taken the initiative to present it to the AKC board of directors.

Since last spring we have been working on a proposal to present to the AKC. Included in our packet to them is general information about LGRA, their running rules, how points are earned, the safety aspects and participation statistics provided by the sanctioning organization for the past few years. Several months ago I asked for testimonials from LGRA participants to be included as part of our proposal; a few of you took the time to share your enthusiasm for the sport, we thank you very much, sadly many who indicated they would help in our campaign did not follow though.

We sent our packet to New York in May. We have received notice from Jim Crowley, the AKC secretary, that they are in receipt of our proposal and it is on the agenda for their July meeting of the AKC BOD. When I get any news from the meeting I will share it with you.

February 21, 2009 Dear Members,

Since becoming chair for the health and research committee I have had many calls in reference to veterinary referrals. I have discussed this with the board. To better serve our membership we would like our members to refer
university based veterinary clinics to the IWCA website. University clinics can refer locally.

Our goal here is to have information readily available when our membership is in time of need.   Please submit your university based clinics to Pat Reilley
.

Please include pertinent clinic information that would be helpful quickly. University name, address, hours of operation, phone numbers, website URL (if there is one).  On behalf of our membership I would like to thank you all.

  Sincerely
  Michael P Genovese DDS
